1962 Reunion of Minor and Junior Hurlers
A hugely enjoyable re-union of the 1962 minor and junior teams was held in the Community Hall on Sunday January 20th 2013. The event, which was brilliantly organised by our president Eddie O’Riordan and Ollie O’Connor, brought together nearly 30 players from those panels as well as many club supporters. Those teams reached their respective county finals and gave the club a huge boost during a difficult period in our history. Our senior team had been well beaten in the 1960 championship and afterwards the club applied to be re-graded to junior, by-passing intermediate. As Eddie recalled at the re-union, we lost a number of players and officers and it was a challenge to keep the club moving forward.
Eddie, however, was one of those who took up the challenge and on Sunday night a presentation was made to Eddie in recognition of his contribution to Carrigtwohill at that time – and throughout the last 50 years. A presentation was also made to Ollie for his role in organising the re-union and also in recognition of his invaluable work for the club in many different projects over the years.
Among the speakers on the night were John Barry, who captained the 1962 junior team and was also a selector; Davy O’Keeffe, who was the goalie on that team and Billy Savage who played full back in that era. It was an evening of great yarns and memories – recalling especially the famous East Cork final of 1962 against Castlemartyr which took three matches to resolve. A great gallery of photographs from that period and previous decades was arranged and displayed by Ollie on one of the walls and that was a terrific focus of conversation.
Music on the night was provided by Ollie O’Brien, Willie Hogan, Donal Curtin and Michael Cummins while Jim Cooney of Guilders Bar and the catering committee of the Community Council provided the refreshments. Our sincere thanks to all of them. They contributed handsomely to a really special night.
The junior team won the ‘A’ East Cork championship by defeating Castlemartyr in a memorable final after two replays and, after a great run in the county championship, were narrowly beaten by Eire Og in the county final. The minor hurlers won the county championship (country section) for the first time when they defeated Inniscarra.
Eddie O’Riordan, club president, is organising the event on behalf of the club. Eddie was club secretary at the time and also a member of the junior team. He fondly remembers 1962 as a very special year in the history of the club and attributes the revival in the club’s fortunes, after decending from the senior ranks in 1961, to the success of that year. Further details of what promises to be a great social evening for the hurlers of 50 years ago will be communicated over the next few weeks.
