Fr O Neills 1-08 Carrigtwohill 0-09
Carrig’s first championship game of the year took place on Sunday last the 11th of March in Ballymacoda against Fr O Neills. Carrig took a few minutes to get up to speed with the game and were 2 points down until Cathal McSweeney opened their account with a well-struck 45. McSweeney added another 2 points from play, along with 1 point each from Ronan Barrett, Niall McCarthy, Jason Barrett and Stephen Dineen which gave them a 7 points to 2 lead. Fr O Neills took advantage of some slack defending towards the end of the half and managed to get a goal just when they seemed to be out of the contest. McSweeney pointed a late free to make the half time score 1-02 to Carrigs 0-08
Having had the advantage of the strong wind in the first half scores were always going to be difficult to come by. Fr O Neills opened the second half scoring, but it took Carrig until the 10th minute to register. This pointed free again from the inform McSweeney would prove to be their only score of the half. O Neills scored another 5 unanswered points in what was a scrappy second half with both sides guilty of misses. This was a game, which was won as a result of missed chances and maybe a bit more fitness of the side of Fr O Neills. Congratulations to Fr O Neills who deserved their victory. It’s not quiet the end of the road for Carrig as there is a back door system.
