Our annual U11 hurling tournament ‘the Sean Twomey’ was held on Saturday 15th of September with six teams taking part, divided into two groups of three. The hosts Carrig were in a group with Tracton & Lisgoold, while the second group comprised Aghada, Erins Own & St. Vincents.
Carrig played Tracton in their first game and after a tremendous tussle came out on top, in the second game Tracton beat Lisgoold. Carrig were playing neighbours Lisgoold in their last group game and came out on top to qualify for the final. In the other group Aghada won all their games to qualify to meet Carrig in the final, with Erins Own coming second to meet Tracton in the ‘plate final’.
Erins Own retained the ‘Plate’ after an extremely entertaining game with Tracton, well done to all involved. The tension was palpable as Carrig faced favourites Aghada in the final and what a game it turned out to be. Carrig raced into an early lead and with both sides giving everything half time approached with Carrig leading. The second began with an early Carrig score and the excitement was reaching new heights and supporters of both sides giving their teams tremendous backing. With five minutes left Carrig relinquished the lead for the first time and despite giving their all they were unable to regain the lead and Aghada emerged as victors in a game that was a credit to all involved. Once again the Sean Twomey was a very sporting occasion and credit must go to all the teams that took part providing a great day’s entertainment for all.
A special word of thanks to those who catered for the large attendance, also to those who prepared the pitches and ensured that everything ran smoothly on the day. Thanks to those who refereed the games and especially to the players of the six clubs who gave us a scintillating display of the skills of hurling.
