Senior Hurling League v Glen Rovers in Carrigtwohill on Sunday 28th February 2016
Carrigtwohill 1-9 Glen Rovers 0-15
Carrig’s senior hurlers started their RedFM League campaign with a slightly disappointing three point defeat to county champions Glen Rovers in Carrig on Sunday morning. The Glen were missing just two of their county final line-up while Carrig where short half a dozen first team regulars for a variety of reasons. In the end Carrig’s finishing let them down despite an honest, hard-working performance.
Carrig trailed by a point at the end of a low-scoring first half, punctuated by a glut of wides by both sides. Young Daire Crotty showed up exceptionally well at centre field with a really energetic and intelligent performance and was unlucky not to get a goal after a surging run. Sean Dempsey was excellent under puck-outs and the Carrig defence, led by Colm O’Connell and Michael O’Riordan, coped extremely well with the Glen Rovers attack.
The Glen had a player sent off before half time but with the wind at their backs in the second half they were able to get bodies behind the ball and shoot for points from distance. With top scorer Tomas Hogan in terrific form again and Jay Horgan storming into the game in the final quarter Carrig threatened to draw level with the Glen on a few occasions. But by the time Michael Fitzgerald scored the only goal of the game with a few minutes left the Glen were four points clear and were able to close out the victory.
