League v Blackrock in Carrigtwohill on Thursday 17th March 2016
Carrigtwohill 1-12 Blackrock 1-20
A strong finish from Blackrock decided this very keenly contested Red FM senior hurling league match in Carrig on St Patrick’s Day. Carrig led by a point with ten minutes to go but were out-scored 1-6 to 0-1 by the city side in the time that remained. The final score line was a harsh reflection on Carrig’s performance which had been very good for 50 minutes.
Carrig played with the breeze in the first half but squandered a couple of goal-scoring opportunities and trailed by a point at the break, 0-9 to 0-8. Sean Dempsey and Niall McCarty were outstanding in the Carrig half forward line but scores were hard to come by and at half time it looked as if Carrig faced an uphill struggle.
In fairness to the Carrig players they dug in after the break with Colm O’Connell and Paraic Hogan terrific in defence and Liam O’Sullivan and Jay Horgan continuing to work extremely hard at centre field. A goal from Michael Fitzgerald put Carrig ahead mid-way through the second half but during a brief period of dominance Carrig missed a handful of chances to consolidate their position. Blackrock came back with a goal that restored their lead and tacked on a succession of points in the closing minutes. >
Carrig’s next league match is at home to Na Piarsaigh at noon on Easter Monday.
