Senior Hurling Championship v Sarsfields in Caherlag on Saturday 28th May 2016
Carrigtwohill 0-11 Sars 0-14
Carrig’s senior hurlers came up just short against Sars in a tight first round match in Caherlag on Saturday night. No more than a point or two separated the teams for most of the match until last year’s county finalists finally pulled away in the last ten minutes despite the brave efforts of a hugely committed Carrig team.
Carrig held the lead on a couple of occasions in the first half but never by more than a point. Daniel O’Mahony got a couple of excellent points from play and Tomas Hogan added four points from frees, two of them beauties. Sars, though, picked up a couple of points just before half time to lead by 0-8 to 0-6 at the break.
The Carrig defence was once again outstanding with Ronan Power and Michael O’Riordan terrific in the half back line and young Brian Cashman making an excellent championship debut at corner back. Jay Horgan did a brilliant man-marking job on Cork senior Daniel Kearney who was a peripheral figure in the game and Carrig were still in the hunt mid-way through the second half.
Robbie White scored a lovely point just after the break and Niall McCarthy arrowed over one of his trademark points off his left near the side line. Carrig, though, were never able to draw level at any stage in the second half and the goal that Carrig really needed failed to materialise despite the best efforts of Niall Mac around the square.
