League v Blackrock in Carrigtwohill on Tuesday 7th March 2017
Carrigtwohill 0-10 Blackrock 5-10
Carrig’s senior hurlers opened their League campaign with a slightly frustrating defeat against last year’s League winners Blackrock. Fielding a young and inexperienced team Carrig were in front, 0-6 to 0-4, approaching half-time until Blackrock reeled off 1-3 without reply in a matter of minutes.
The Rockies added two goals in quick succession immediately after the break which, all of a sudden, gave Carrig a mountain to climb. To their credit the Carrig players didn’t drop their heads and kept fighting to the end. Young Daire Crotty rattled off four brilliant points from play, Shane Healy struck two beautiful points, one in each half, and the impressive Cathal O’Sullivan finished Carrig’s best move of the match with a terrific point from long range. Tomas Hogan’s accuracy from play and placed balls also kept Carrig in the hunt.
In defence Aaron Gosnell, Colm O’Connell and young Conor O’Mahony did really well and apart from a ten minute spell either side of half time a new and emerging Carrig team were extremely competitive against one of the best teams in the county.
