League v Sarsfields in Riverstown on Sunday 11th June 2017
Sarsfields 0-17 Carrigtwohill 0-15
A young Carrig side, carrying a couple of knocks, finished the first phase of the league campaign in familiar fashion with a hard-working performance and periods of real quality failing to prevent a close loss at the death. 3 of Carrig’s 6 losses in the league this year have been by 3 points or less as well as a tight 5-point loss to Newtownshandrum. Add to that a frustrating draw with 14-man Bride Rovers and Carrig will feel unlucky that a couple of those results didn’t swing their way.
A warm Sunday evening in Riverstown was the setting for the most difficult challenge yet with an undefeated Sars side, in league and championship, on a high after defeating Duhallow in championship the previous week and advancing to Round 4. Nevertheless, Carrig battled ably and were more than a measure for Sars in the first half and they led by 3 points, 7 to 4, at the 15 minute mark. Sars clawed their way back before the half with both teams going in at 8 points apiece. Tomás Hogan, Sean Rohan and Liam Gosnell provided the bulk of the scores with Jay Horgan adding a point from midfield.
It was more of the same in the second half as Sars and Carrig traded points before the Glanmire men edged ahead in the last 10 minutes. The same players were to the fore for Carrig on the scoreboard and Padraic Hogan and Aaron Gosnell marshalled the Sars inside forward line very effectively. Shane Devlin also pulled off a couple of fine stops that he made look routine.
Focus now turns to Round 2B of the championship in Ovens on the 24th with a Bandon side who have had their own struggles in the league.
