Championship v Killeagh in Midleton on Saturday 1st July 2017
Carrigtwohill 0-7 Killeagh 4-15
A tough championship outing for our junior hurlers was played out in Midleton on a warm July evening last Saturday. Killeagh were sharp from the get-go and ran out to a six point to one lead inside the first twelve minutes; a Christopher Keegan free putting Carrig on the board after eight minutes. Carrig spent the next ten minutes re-asserting themselves into the game with the half-back line of minor hurlers Kevin Coady and Brendan Twomey and the recently-engaged Shane Healy battling well. Colin Santry was picking up ball after being moved to midfield and Jamie McCarthy and Darragh McCann were hurling ably inside. Two fine points from the right sideline from Santry and McCann had Carrig within a score with ten minutes to go in the half. Stephen Flynn also provided a couple of fine saves to keep Killeagh at bay. Unfortunately, on twenty minutes, a loose ball in the Carrig full-back line was seized upon for a Killeagh goal that edged them six points in front. Another Keegan free and a further placed ball from Kelly O’Regan saw Carrig go in at the half down five, 1-7 to 0-5.
The second half started as did the first with Killeagh rattling over some early scores but unfortunately that pattern didn’t change for the next thirty minutes. Killeagh built on their superiority and despite the best efforts of the Carrig hurlers ran out easy winners. A Kelly O’Regan free and a mighty score from wing-back by Brendan Twomey were Carrig’s only scores of the half.
On a positive note Carrig managed to give game time to twenty players with more on the bench after a league campaign where the bare fifteen was hard to find at times. It was also a good precursor for the young lads who will line out in under-21 and minor championship in the next two weeks. Carrig’s juniors will now look to push on from this through the back door.
