Championship v Valley Rovers in Ovens on Tuesday 11th July 2017
Carrigtwohill 4-16 Valley Rovers 2-4
Carrigtwohill’s minors put on a clinical display last Tuesday evening that banished any lingering bad memories of Ovens. It was a dominant performance by a fancied Carrig side which saw Liam Gosnell register an imperious 2-12. There were twenty men who won their individual battles however and Carrig will take great confidence from their collective efforts.
Carrig took to the field playing against the breeze, the hill and a few tufts of grass in Éire Óg’s far pitch. It was the Innishannon side who made their mark on the game first when a runner from midfield found his way through the middle and netted a goal for the opening score of the game inside three minutes. Carrig never wavered however and centre-forward Liam Gosnell rattled over three points in three minutes, two from frees. Corner-forward Sean Walsh split two more Valleys points and when Kitan Oke pointed from midfield on twelve minutes Carrig were level and would never look back. Liam Gosnell was in an unstoppable mood and created and finished Carrig’s opening goal with a fine darting run. Gosnell nailed another free on sixteen minutes before a long ball into hard-working full-forward Dara McCann was batted down and the on-running John Carroll, showing great awareness and movement, ran onto the sliotar and goaled neatly. Valleys were determined that the same thing wouldn’t happen again so the next high ball around the square saw a Carrig man floored unfairly and a penalty given; Gosnell dispatched it for Carrig’s third goal. At the other end Cillian Carroll, Jack Scully and Kevin Coady were giving up nothing inside and recently-minted Munster champion Aaron Walsh Barry looked the part at six. Gosnell responded to a third Valleys point with two more of his own, one from a placed ball. Carrig went in at the break ahead by 3-8 to 1-3.
The second half resumed in familiar fashion with Gosnell deadly accurate from a free before the impressive James Mulcahy marauded down the right touchline and cut in, burying Carrig’s fourth goal from an acute angle. Mulcahy proved a great outlet with his ability in the air and his turn of pace on the wing and he produced a mighty finish. Valleys responded with a goal of their own but it provided no respite as Carrig scored the next five points, four from Gosnell, including a difficult free earned after some great running by David Folasaide. Kitan Oke scored another from distance and battled ably at midfield all day alongside Cormac O’Flynn. Ryan O’Donovan pulled off a number of fine saves and his puckouts were a key factor in putting Carrig on the front foot. When Valleys sought to apply pressure Gary O’Brien and Shane O’Hanlon were up to the task and Walsh Barry, moved to full back, cleared the world of ball. The Innishannon side would register only one more point before Gosnell and Oke fired over two fine scores from distance to seal an emphatic win.
It was a noteworthy opening salvo for Carrig that sees them progress to the winners round where they will meet Fermoy. Remarkably this was Carrig’s seventeenth game of the year between league and challenge matches and the hard work and preparation was evident for all to see. The players and coaches deserve immense credit for a fine performance.
