Championship v St. Catherines in Killeagh on Saturday 22nd July 2017
Carrigtwohill 3-18 St. Catherines 1-17
Carrig began their U21 A hurling championship campaign with a seven point win over St. Catherines in Killeagh last Saturday.
A strong start saw our U21s score three points in the first three minutes with Daragh Crotty, Darren O’Driscoll and Brendan McCarthy all pointing from play before Ciarán Gosnell took a fine O’Driscoll pass and goaled to establish a firm grip on the game. Catherines didn’t lie down however and scored the next three points before two further points from O’Driscoll and a Liam Gosnell free saw Carrig’s impressive attack re-assert themselves. Catherines again attempted to claw back into the game with back-to-back scores but were left with a lot to do after Dara McCann controlled a threaded ball from O’Driscoll for Carrig’s second goal of the game. Carrig’s lead was now 2-7 to 0-6. Keitan Oke sailed over an excellent score from midfield and when Kelly O’Regan pointed on twenty-eight minutes all six forwards and both midfielders were on the scoreboard. Carrig went in ahead at the break by seven points, 2-10 to 0-9.
St. Catherines battled ably in the second half and early scores from Oke, L. Gosnell, O’Driscoll and McCarthy were needed to keep them at bay. Brendan Twomey and Shane Murphy were hurling well in defence as Catherines sought to find a way through the Carrig rearguard. With ten minutes to go the Ballynoe side had reduced Carrig’s lead to four points with a scrambled goal but Ciarán and Liam Gosnell responded with back-to-back points to stem the tide. On fifty-four minutes a long ball from Brendan McCarthy found its way to the net for Carrig’s third goal, pushing the lead back to seven points.
There were still two minutes on the clock when St. Catherines were awarded a penalty however. Carrigtwohill goalkeeper Stephen Flynn faced up and dived athletically to his right corner, pulling off a fantastic save to ensure that there would not be a nervous finish for Carrig. A final Liam Gosnell free was the last puck of the game.
Well done to all players and coaches on a well-deserved win.
