Premier 2A Minor Hurling Championship Winner’s Round
Carrigtwohill 2-15 (21) Fermoy 2-9 (15) in Riverstown on Sunday, July 30th.
Referee: Cathal Egan (Glen Rovers)
Carrig’s minors went in at half-time in this P2A minor hurling championship clash knowing that they had not yet made an impression on the game. The first thirty minutes belonged to a well-organised Fermoy side who adapted to the wet conditions better and took control of the game in the middle third. The same Carrigtwohill fifteen emerged for the second half and from the throw-in they conquered every corner of the field and turned in a scintillating half hour that ended with a ten-point turnaround.
The first six minutes of the opening half saw Fermoy capitalise on a fast start by scoring 1-2. Liam Gosnell provided Carrig’s only riposte before Brendan Twomey brought us back within a goal on thirteen minutes. Gosnell and Fermoy again traded points before a second Fermoy goal was struck on twenty minutes after a darting inside run from the corner-forward. Trailing 2-3 to 0-3 and struggling to gain possession, Carrig still showed impressive resilience by scoring the next three points through two Liam Gosnell frees and a fantastic score from distance from the hard-working Kitan Oke. Fermoy had the last say in the half with a point on thirty minutes.
Faced with a tough task to turn the tide against a confident Fermoy outfit, Carrig emerged undaunted and set about their task with tremendous zeal and passion. In the twenty minutes after Referee Cathal Egan resumed the second half, Liam Gosnell scored 1-7 without reply. It was an outstanding display of striking from the placed ball and open play with the goal coming fortuitously after the Fermoy goalkeeper dropped a long ball to his net. The platform for this second-half success came from one to fifteen. The inside backs negated a dangerous-looking Fermoy full-forward line and the half-back line of Shane O’Hanlon, Aaron Walsh Barry and David Rooney were outstanding in repelling anything and everything that came their way. Brendan Twomey and Kitan Oke took a hold of midfield and won a lot of dirty ball to keep Carrig on the front foot. After being shutout for over twenty minutes Fermoy sought to re-assert themselves in the game and put over three points in five minutes with 15-year old Sean Walsh replying with his own fine score to keep Carrig four points ahead. The jangling nerves of the Carrig crowd were settled on fifty-seven minutes however as full-forward Dara McCann, impressive all evening, swept home to the Fermoy net from close-range to seal a deserved victory. There was still time for Gosnell to push his remarkable personal tally to 1-12 with a well-taken point at the end. He scored 2-12 in the opening round against Valley Rovers. Fermoy did score two points in the inordinate amount of injury time played but the match was well beyond them by then.
The minor hurlers deserve immense credit for turning this game on its head and their performance produced some fantastic hurling. They now advance to the championship semi-finals alongside Fr. O’Neills. The quarter-finals will be contested by Ballinhassig versus Killeagh/Ita’s and Aghabullogue versus Fermoy. Well done to the players and coaches on this result and we look forward to the semi-final.
