Red FM Senior Hurling League Group 3 in Togher on Thursday, August 3rd.
St. Finbarrs 3-23 Carrigtwohill 0-16
Referee: Simon Stokes (Tullylease)
Phase 2 of the Red FM Senior Hurling League began for Carrig and the Barrs on a blustery, showery evening in Togher’s main pitch on Thursday. Both sides were under strength but there was some neat hurling on display despite the gap since both clubs last played competitively and in spite of the wet conditions.
Carrig played against the wind in the first half and were the better of the two sides but didn’t build a bigger lead that their play deserved. This half would feature five different scorers with Sean Dempsey notching first on the board with a fine strike from left half-forward before right half-forward Dara Crotty sent Carrig in ahead at the break, 0-9 to 0-7. Liam Gosnell registered three points from corner-forward and Darren O’Driscoll chipped in with two excellent scores. Centre-forward Tomás Hogan added another with Carrig well on top in the backs and at midfield but only two points ahead.
The second half started much as the first finished with Carrig and the Barrs going tit-for-tat. O’Driscoll and Gosnell were again proving the dangermen inside. The game changed when a Barrs forward broke free on goal and despite Devlin making an athletic dive and getting a hurley to the sliotar, the ball trickled into the net. Carrig managed to reduce the arrears to three points, thanks to two fantastic scores in two minutes from Liam O’Sullivan, but the game slowly went beyond them as St. Finbarrs used the numbers on their bench to introduce fresh legs and see out the game.
Bishopstown and Killeagh are the two other opponents in Group 3 of the league with the group winners the only side to progress to the quarter-finals.
