This year brought a slight difference to the draws for the Under 13 Imokilly League. Each group of 4 had an A Grade Team, with 3 B Grade Teams.
Our Group consisted of Dungourney, Midleton, Youghal and ourselves. Three fine adversaries for us to contend with. Our first round match was against Dungourney on 19th June 2017. Dungourney had just enough numbers for a 15 a-side as did Carrigtwohill but from the get-go, Carrigtwohill were playing at top form. Two goals in quick succession in the first 10 minutes from Sinead Crowley and Ciara Horgan boosted the girls confidence. Another 2 points quickly went over the bar from Kerrie Dorgan and Ciara Walsh. A lovely run it straight through the centre from Micheala Horgan who then blasted the sliotar into the back of the net. Again, 3 minutes before the end of the first half Ciara Horgan took a loose ball and sent us into the break 4:3- 0:0. Into the second half with the same energy, the Carrig girls took every opportunity to open up a loose Dungourney defence. Dungourney kept the pressure on at every opportunity but unfortunately never looked like the game was up for grabs. Scores from Sinead Crowley, Ciara Walsh & Kerrie Dorgan sealed the deal for the first round of the league.
Round 2 saw Carrigtwohill up against the A Grade Team in our Group- Youghal. We were away to Youghal on a wet, miserable evening on 28th June. We anticipated that this was going to be a battle from the off. On the night, our numbers were tight but we were able to fill a starting 15 who came out of the starting blocks like bullets ! They held YOughal to a nil all score for 16 minutes where Youghal came straight through our defence and scored a point. An answer came from Carrigtwohill a few minutes later with some lovely play through midfield to score a lovely point from play. This was probably the best game the Carrig girls played all season. There was nothing in it when the half time whistle blew- score 0.2- 0.2. The weather deteriorated in the second half, and with a couple of the girls carrying knocks, Youghal were able to penetrate our usually tight defence on three occasions. Despite the loss, Carrig girls played a superb game from end to end to hold Youghal for the majority of the match.
Round 3 was played on 3rd July against our neighbours Midleton. Midleton have always been a strong adversary, despite being such a new Club has been very successful at U14 level this year, and we expected a tough match. Unfortunately for them, Midleton just did not seem to be on form. First goal within 2 minutes from a short puck out by the midleton keeper seemed to be the spark that started the fire in the Carrig girls. Score after score came with Carrigtwohill just not putting a foot wrong in any part of the pitch. Superb defending ensured the goalie had nothing to do and every scoring opportunity was taken at the other end of the pitch with some lovely points from play from our forward line. There were 11 scores in the match from 6 players which is testament to the confidence they have grown since the beginning of the season. Communication and some lovely work down the wings gave the Carrig girls a well deserved win.
Having won 2 out of 3 matches, we came out 2nd in our Group which qualified us for the A Plate Semi-Final. The draw was Carrig v’s Cobh but with home advantage for Carrig.
Saturday 29th July was semi-final day and we expected a very tough match from what is usually a strong Cobh side. Our U13 Team again could do nothing wrong on the day. Each and every girl on the pitch contributed to what was a fantastic game of Camogie. The scoreline did not reflect the fact that Cobh fought for every ball on the pitch and never put their head down throughout the game. Despite going into the second half 3 goals up, Cobh always looked like a threat. A massive goal from a free by Aishling Sexton was really just the icing on the cake for the Carrig girls. The girls worked hard the entire match to make sure to win every ball, clear their lines, and take their scoring opportunities at every available chance. April Normoyle battled with her marker like her life depended on it every time the ball came within a yard of her. It would have been impossible to pick any one girl out of this squad, as they all worked very hard, used opportunities and covered every inch of the pitch on the day.
This win brings us to the Under 13 Imokilly A Plate Final which will be played on Friday 11th August in Caherlag against Erins’ Own. If you have the opportunity, it would be great for the girls to get some support on the evening up there.
