We lost the toss so travelled to Erin’s Own on Friday 11th August 2017, geared up to take on an Erin’s Own Team who had earned their place in an East Cork Final over the last few weeks.
Our girls had trained hard and were well prepared for battle by the time they togged out and ran out on to the pitch. No doubt there were nerves, but it wasn’t on show on the pitch.
Our Captain was selected, and Kerrie Dorgan went out to toss the coin. Kerrie has an outstanding record of 98% attendance at training since we began back in February and was a well deserved Captain on the night. We were playing towards the sun in the first half with a slight wind from the west that only had a minor impact in the first half. A fine battle ensued with little or nothing between the teams going into half time. A fine point from Sinead Crowley from play in the 4th minute was answered by a goal at the other end just catching the Carrig backs off guard at the 5 minute mark. A lovely ball into Micheala Horgan gave her an opportunity, which she took, to plant the ball in the net just on 15 minutes. Another fine point from play by Sinead put the score 1;2 – 1:0 at half time.
The second half was a different story, Carrigtwohill came out on fire. Some lovely hand passing and long range shots brought the game out of the oppositions reach by mid second half. Unfortunately for Erin’s Own, Carrigtwohill girls just could do no wrong on the night. All the hours of training, tough matches earlier in the season, just all fell into place on the night and nothing was going to take away this final from them. However, Erins Own girls just battled on to the very end and never gave up right to the final whistle. Their goalkeeper had an outstanding match and held the match for the first half.
This Team deserved their night of glory and played an exceptional game of Camogie on the night. It was a lovely clean, sharp game and commiserations to Erins Own girls.
A big thank you to Sandra and the Team at Erins Own who provided an ice-cream van for everyone afterwards. It was a lovely gesture on the night.
We travelled back to the village and beeped our way around the Village to honour the Team and then back to GAA Club rooms for well deserved pizza and goodies !!
