U21 A East Cork Hurling Championship
Carrigtwohill 1-11 (14) Castlelyons 4-16 (28)
in Dungourney on Friday, August 18th
Referee: Arthur Murphy (Killeagh)
Carrig’s ambition to make a mark on this year’s U21 championship came to an end in Dungourney last Friday as a well-organised Castlelyons never relinquished a lead they held from the 18th minute.
Carrig were without Cork U21 Darren O’Driscoll but welcomed back Jamie McCarthy who had missed the win over St. Catherines in the opening round. Castlelyons started much better and scored 5 points in the opening 13 minutes with Dara McCann registering Carrig’s only goal in reply after some great individual endeavour. Carrig then looked to have found their rhythm in the middle of the first half as Liam Gosnell sent over 2 points and McCann brought his tally to 1-1. It would be the last lead Carrig held however as Castlelyons responded to Gosnell’s point with a goal on 18 minutes. It set a pattern for the game where Carrig’s best efforts to impose themselves were knocked back as Castlelyons responded and they never managed to reel them in. Castlelyons saw out the half with 4 straight points after Gosnell landed another free in the 27th minute. It was 2-12 to 1-6 at the half.
The second half evened out with both teams trading scores but it was never enough for Carrig to get back into the game. Brendan McCarthy, Luke Kelly O’Regan and Kiitan Oke all pointed from range and a brace from Gosnell’s placed ball rounded out our scores in this half. Castlelyons had a player sent off early in the half for striking Liam Gosnell after he was tackled and a melee ensued when a Castlelyons player made an unsavoury tackle on Brendan McCarthy midway through the half. From this second incident Dara Crotty and another Castlelyons player received straight red cards. Carrig went in search of goals but their attempts were in vain and Castlelyons scored their fourth goal in the last minute to see out the match.
We would like to thank Philip Kidney, Paul Keegan, Vince Crotty and Kieran Gosnell, as well as the players, for their efforts this year.
