Rebel Óg Premier 2A Minor Hurling Championship Semi-final in Carrigaline on Wednesday, September 6th
Carrigtwohill 2-17 Ballinhassig 2-10
Referee: Colm Lyons (Nemo Rangers)
When Carrig took the field in Carrigaline for this Premier 2A minor hurling championship semi-final, it was their 23rd outing of the year between league, non-exam and challenge matches. The incredible preparation, fitness and skill on display over the following sixty minutes was a testament to the hard work put in by players and coaches over the last year. With only one league game against Valley Rovers following the second round win over Fermoy, Carrig made two trips to Waterford to play Abbeyside and Dungarvan to maintain the high standard they had set earlier in the league and championship. A week before this game Frank Flannery even came down to coach up the lads and impart some wisdom that helped him guide our 2007 minors, which included current mentors Tomás Hogan and Liam O’Sullivan (who captained the team), to a county title over Newcestown.
The hard work paid off immediately with a blistering start by Carrig that saw them score four points from four different scorers in the first five minutes. Captain Liam Gosnell, Sean Walsh, John Carroll and Kiitan Oke raised the white flag for Carrig. When Ballinhassig registered their first point Carrig showed they were in no mood to let up and savvy play from Dara McCann saw him strike to the net after a long-range effort came back off the Ballinhassig upright. Liam Gosnell was causing havoc at centre-forward and tacked on another point to give Carrig a seven point lead inside ten minutes that they wouldn’t relinquish. Ballinhassig did score a goal on fourteen minutes when a free dropped short into the Carrig goalmouth and was eventually poked home. There was a great deal of movement from Ballinhassig throughout which left a lot of space inside but the full-back line of Ryan Conroy, Jack Scully and Aaron Walsh Barry were more than equal to the high ball coming in. Out the field Brendan Twomey and Kiitan Oke were hurling a pile of ball in defence and attack. Gosnell added another free and another fine point from corner-forward Walsh had Carrig up by six again after twenty minutes. Ballinhassig tacked on their second point of the half but that was again immediately followed by a Carrig goal as Gosnell won the ball at centre-forward and took off before burying a rasper past Cork minor goalkeeper, Ger Collins. He followed that up with another free and James Mulcahy completed Carrig’s scoring with an outstanding effort from the wing. Ballinhassig were still battling and added three points in the final five minutes but Carrig were in command at the half, ahead by 2-9 to 1-5.
It was déjà vu all over again on the restart as Carrig blitzed Ballinhassig with five of the first six points in the third quarter. There were four different scorers again highlighting the spread of talent across the panel. Liam Gosnell registered another two, Dara McCann notched one and Kiitan Oke slotted over one of his trademark long-range strikes. Fifteen-year old Sean Walsh grabbed his third point of the day to round out a fantastic evening at corner-forward. Carrig were now leading 2-14 to 1-6 and Ballinhassig had to break the emergency glass on goalkeeper Ger Collins and put him in full-forward for the final fifteen minutes. It was a ploy that worked in the quarter-final win over Killeagh and it paid immediate dividends as Collins buried an unstoppable 21-metre free to bring the Blues within eight. Ballinhassig added another point two minutes later and looked to get up a head of steam for the last ten minutes. Carrig were under increasing pressure but Ryan O’Donovan was solid under the high ball in goal and Shane O’Hanlon and David Rooney stepped up big time to clear the lines time and again. Billy Manning, John Carroll and James Mulcahy were great outlets and the latter knocked over his second score on fifty-two minutes to put Carrig eight points ahead. Ballinhassig threw bodies forward in the last few minutes but the Carrig rearguard didn’t give an inch and Ballinhassig managed only three more points which were answered by two Gosnell frees.
Carrig have secured three wins from three in championship this year and they will meet Fermoy in the final. Carrig and Fermoy already met in the second round when Carrig overturned a four-point half-time deficit to win by six. It has been an outstanding year for our minors thus far and everyone involved deserves immense credit for progressing to the county not least the management team of Tomás Hogan, Kieran Gosnell, Mick Boland, Liam O’Sullivan, Seamus Roche and Brian Cashman. Carraig Abú!
