Rebel Óg Premier 2A Minor Hurling Championship Final in Carrigaline on Tuesday, September 12th
Carrigtwohill 1-7 Fermoy 3-13
Referee: Pat Lyons (Bishopstown)
A disappointing end to a promising year was the outcome for our minor hurlers in Carrigaline last Tuesday. Conditions were wet under foot from the off and a very strong wind blew from the town to the clubhouse. Carrig won the toss and elected to play against the wind for the first half.
Fermoy opened the game much the brighter and were three points up inside eight minutes as Carrig’s efforts couldn’t find the distance into the gale. Carrig did manage to move level with Fermoy on ten minutes as a long ball into the square fell at the feet of John Carroll and he did well to strike home. It would prove to be Carrig’s last score of the half however. Fermoy scored 1-8 without reply in the next twenty minutes and were aided by Carrig’s indiscipline which saw the Avondhu side convert a number of frees. Carrig were battling away but any strike at goal or attempt at an accurate forward ball came up short into the wind. Carrig trailed at the half by 1-11 to a goal.
With such a commanding lead Fermoy withdrew a number of players deep and brought some of their better hurlers to the middle third to stymy any attempt at a comeback. Nevertheless, Carrig came out with renewed purpose and Liam Gosnell scored four points in the first ten minutes, including three frees, to bring Carrig within seven. Fermoy’s response was to score another goal at the other end with just over fifteen minutes to go which left Carrig with too much to do. The lads never gave up however and launched a number of attacks right to the death which saw James Mulcahy, Aaron Walsh Barry and Brendan Twomey register points. With so many men in Fermoy’s half there was a great deal of space in front of Carrig’s full back line and Fermoy registered a third goal at the end but it was of little consequence to the outcome of the game.
It was an unfortunate end to a fantastic year but everyone involved with this minor team should be rightly proud of their achievements. There was some fantastic hurling on display throughout the year and no doubt there will be many players from this team that will go on to represent Carrigtwohill at junior and senior level over the coming years. The club would again like to thank Tomás Hogan, Liam O’Sullivan, Kieran Gosnell, Seamus Roche, Mick Boland, Brian Cashman and all of the players for their efforts this year.
