RedFM Senior Hurling League Round 3
Carrigtwohill 0-13 (13) Douglas 2-16 (22)
in Carrig on Sunday, March 25th
Referee: Pa Beausang (Midleton)
A strong Douglas side came away with the win on a sunny morning in Carrig last Sunday. Conditions were perfect for hurling in Carrig’s home league opener but they are still looking for their first victory. A tough opening stretch has seen Carrig face off against three of the top five teams in the league standings. This was the largest margin of defeat so far but another battling performance leaves optimism moving into the next stretch of games.
Sixteen minutes into the game it was 0-3 apiece. Douglas opened the scoring with a free before Tomás Hogan responded from play. Two more Douglas points were answered by a Hogan free and an outstanding effort from Aaron Walsh Barry who struck from the right sideline after a bursting run forward. Carrig were more than holding their own in the game when disaster struck on nineteen minutes; a Douglas forward was quickest to a spilled Carrig ball in the six-yard box and struck home, 0-3 to 1-3. Brendan Twomey and Seamus Roche scored excellent individual points either side of a Douglas score to leave Carrig within two with five minutes left in the half. Just as Carrig were working their way back into the game, Douglas struck for their second goal when Carrig were unprepared for an attempt at goal from a thirty-metre free. Another Hogan placed ball and a Liam O’Sullivan point were then cancelled out by two more Douglas scores to leave the half time score, 2-7 to 0-7.
Two Tomás Hogan frees opened the second half scoring before Douglas rattled over four points in a row. A fifth Hogan free and a point from Darren O’Driscoll had Carrig back within six, 2-11 to 0-11, with fifteen minutes to go. Liam O’Sullivan added another before Douglas stretched their lead with another three-point salvo in the final ten minutes. A sixth Hogan free from six rounded out Carrig’s total before two late Douglas points put the exclamation point on the result.
Another quick turnaround sees Carrig welcome Kanturk to West End this Saturday before travelling to Killeagh the following week in league action.
