RedFM Senior Hurling League
Carrig 1-22 (25) Kanturk 4-18 (30)
in Carrig on Saturday, March 31st.
Referee: James Bermingham (Bride Rovers)
After putting up a combined 1-32 in their first three league games, few would have predicted Carrig scoring 1-22 against a strong Kanturk side last Saturday. It wasn’t enough in the end however as four scrappy goals proved to be Carrig’s downfall at the final whistle.
An even opening five minutes saw Carrig lead Kanturk by 0-3 to 0-2 with Brendan McCarthy, a Liam Gosnell free and a Tomás Hogan point the scores for Carrig. Kanturk then took a hold of the game by putting over the next four points to leave Carrig trailing by three with quarter of an hour gone. Led by Gosnell’s impeccable placed ball Carrig roared back into the match with four frees and a Tomás Hogan point putting Carrig up, 0-8 to 0-6, with ten minutes left in the half. Kanturk responded with the first goal of the game, a scrambled effort struck home inside the Carrig square. Jay Horgan and Liam O’Sullivan went point-for-point with Kanturk before another score from the Duhallow side saw them further ahead, 1-9 to 0-10, with twenty-five minutes gone. Carrig struck back immediately down the other end however with Liam Gosnell picking a clean ball outside the twenty and burning past the outside of his man before heading for goal. He added another free before a final Kanturk point rounded out a frantic half. Carrig 1-11 Kanturk 1-10 at the break.
Kanturk drew level with the opening score of the second half but that was immediately cancelled out by Shane Healy. Thirty-five minutes in they grabbed their second goal but great scores from Brendan McCarthy and Liam Gosnell had Carrig back level within minutes. Kanturk then put over a brace of points that was matched by a Gosnell free and another from play to leave the sides again tied on forty-one minutes. Kanturk surged ahead once more with two more scores before Carrig took a hold of the game with a trio of points from Brendan McCarthy and two from Gosnell. Carrig 1-19 (22) Kanturk 2-15 (21) with ten minutes to go. However Kanturk manufactured a goal to restore their lead and when another Gosnell free left the minimum, Carrig were looking to push on for their first win of the year. That task was made harder though when a long-range Kanturk free was pulled to the net in the fifty-fifth minute, 1-20 (23) to 4-15 (27). Carrig mustered a response with Gosnell’s tenth free of the match and a third point for Tomás Hogan to bring it back to one but Kanturk finished the stronger by scoring the last three points.
In the end the goals were the difference but Carrig can take great heart from their attacking prowess and a battling display. They will look to the return of a few reinforcements before championship as a means to improve across the field and this game will stand to the lads who stepped in. Carrig travel to Killeagh this Saturday, April 7th for a 6.45pm throw-in for our next league game.
