SHL: Killeagh 3-14 Carrig 2-7

April 12, 2018

RedFM Senior Hurling League
Killeagh 3-14 (23) Carrig 2-7 (13)
in Killeagh on Saturday, April 7th.
Referee: Cathal McAllister (Aghada)

An under-strength Carrig side came up short in the last ten minutes of this latest senior hurling league game and left Killeagh without a win.

Carrig were already without a number of regular starters and their task was made all the more difficult when centre-back Ronan Power, who had attempted to shake off injury to play, had to be withdrawn in the first five minutes. This necessitated a reshuffle with Aaron Walsh Barry moved to the centre, a position he managed well against Kanturk, and he again showed that even as a minor hurler he looks very at home at this level.

Carrig did get off to a flying start however when Jamie McCarthy collected a ball on the right wing and after a driving run struck home for a Carrig goal inside two minutes. Killeagh responded with three points to draw level and forged ahead with a goal of their own on nine minutes. A Brendan Twomey point preceded another trio of Killeagh scores to leave Carrig trailing, 1-1 to 1-6 after seventeen minutes. Carrig surged back into the game and managed to draw level with a Tomás Hogan score, a Jamie McCarthy point and a goal credited to Seamus Roche after a goalmouth scramble, 2-3 to 1-6 with twenty minutes gone. Unfortunately Killeagh worked the subsequent puckout short and a long delivery found its way directly to the Carrig net. Killeagh tacked on one more point to see out the half ahead, 2-3 to 2-7.

Liam Gosnell opened the scoring in the second half and after a brace of Killeagh points, he responded with two placed balls to bring Carrig within three points going into the final quarter. Killeagh and Tomás Hogan traded points to again leave a goal in it with ten minutes to go,  2-7 to 2-10. Killeagh finished much the stronger however, rattling off 1-4 to see out the game.

Carrig will hope to be back to full fitness for their last league before championship which takes place at home against Newcestown on Friday, April 20th. They can then look forward to a championship bout with Blackrock the following Sunday.

Scorers: J. McCarthy 1-1, L. Gosnell 0-3, S. Roche 1-0, T. Hogan 0-2, B. Twomey 0-1.

Team: Stephen Flynn, Aaron Gosnell, Padraic Hogan, Cian Harte, Aaron Walsh Barry, Ronan Power, Conor O’Mahony, Brendan Twomey, Jay Horgan, Liam O’Sullivan, Tomás Hogan, Seamus Roche, Sean Rohan, Jamie McCarthy, Liam Gosnell. Subs used: Shane Healy for Ronan Power, Paul Barden for Aaron Gosnell, Ollie Baverstock for Brendan Twomey.
