FÉ 16 CENTRAL PREMIER 2A HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Bishopstown v Carrigtwohill in Bishopstown, Monday 30th April
Bishopstown 0-06 Carrigtwohill 5-16
The U16 hurlers had a comprehensive win in the western suburbs of the city on an evening with good conditions for hurling.
Bishopstown registered the first score from a free after just two minutes but in the following 15 minutes, Carrig hit 2-04 with no reply; the goals coming from two first time ground strikes by opportunist corner forward, Jamie Dunlea. A third goal followed 22 minutes into the match, as a long range free by Seán Walsh found the net. Bishopstown converted three further frees over the course of the first half. Carrigtwohill went in at half time leading 3-07 to 0-04.
When Justin Oke goaled within a minute of the restart and followed up two minutes later with a point, the game was all but over as a contest. Daragh Hannigan got a lovely brace of points from the left corner forward position and there were further points from Seán Walsh and another 1-01 from Justin Oke. Heading into injury time, Darren Flynn pulled off a great save from a penalty. A second penalty was immediately awarded for a Carrig foul in the effort to clear the ball after Darren’s save. This one hit the upright and was cleared, which pretty much summed up Bishopstown’s fortunes for the evening.
Well done to the players and mentors on what was a good all round performance, albeit a facile victory. Carrigtwohill now advance to the semi-final of the championship, which will not be played until after the Junior Certificate exams.
