Senior Hurling Championship
Carrigtwohill 1-12 Blackrock 1-19
in Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday, April 29th
Referee: Simon Stokes (Tullylease)
A 100 years since our first ever senior hurling title in 1918, our senior hurlers once again faced Blackrock in championship. Unfortunately the outcome wasn’t the same this time around but a brave display from our hurlers gives hope for the rest of the campaign.
Carrig made all the running early on and by the tenth minute they were three points to no score ahead courtesy of three Liam Gosnell placed balls. Blackrock were level within three minutes however after they followed up their opening point with a well-taken goal from close range. Carrig responded with a green flag of their own on the quarter-hour after full-forward Brendan McCarthy was fouled inside the 13 and a penalty was awarded. Shane Devlin came out of goal and buried the penalty into the top right corner, 1-3 to 1-1. Despite having the better of the play, Carrig couldn’t build enough of a lead over Blackrock, as they pulled level again with two points in five minutes. For the next eight minutes Blackrock traded scores with Liam Gosnell, who was putting on a show at corner-forward, but Carrig managed to edge ahead at the break, 1-8 to 1-7. It was an excellent opening half from Carrig with strong play all across the field.

Carrig again started on the front foot in the second half with Tomás Hogan pointing a great effort from out the field and Liam Gosnell adding another free to give Carrig a three-point cushion, 1-10 to 1-7. Blackrock slowly exerted themselves in the game however and took the lead in the fortieth minute after four straight white flags. With fifteen to go, Gosnell’s unerring free-taking again brought Carrig level but Blackrock’s own free-taker was also striking well and he restored Blackrock’s lead with a brace of points. Another score from play for the Church Road side had them three up with five minutes left, 1-14 to 1-11. A final Gosnell free was Carrig’s last score and Blackrock saw out the game with a flurry of points.

It was a disappointing end but a great effort from our hurlers who can take confidence from a battling performance. Special mention also has to go to the young trio of Liam Gosnell, Brendan Twomey and Aaron Walsh Barry who all played minor last year (Walsh Barry is minor again this year) and looked more than at home at this level. Carrig received a bye to round 3 despite this loss and will await the draw after the second round to determine their next opponent. The earliest this round can be played is late July.
Scorers: L. Gosnell 0-11 (0-8f), S. Devlin 1-0 (pen), T. Hogan 0-1.
