Rebel Óg Premier 2A Hurling Championship
Carrig 0-10 Killeagh/Itas 2-13
in Castlemartyr on Thursday, May 3rd
Referee: Cathal Egan (Glen Rovers)
A hard game on a soft pitch in Castlemartyr saw our minor hurlers come up short against Killeagh/Itas in the opening round of this year’s championship.
The story of an even first half was Killeagh/Itas ability to make the most of their goal chances. They scored a goal at the beginning and end of the half to leave Carrig trailing 2-7 to 0-6 at the break. Sean Walsh had scored Carrig’s first three points with three frees before John Carroll and a brace from Dave Ryan had them within a point on twenty-five minutes. After Carrig missed another chance to draw level, Killeagh finished the half strongly with a goal and three points.
Carrig were up against it in the second half and when Killeagh/Itas dropped a spare man into their defense, a much-needed Carrig goal seemed unlikely. Carrig battled ably however with Cillian Carroll making a point-blank save on his goalline and Aaron Walsh Barry even getting in a point-saving tackle without a hurley. Carrig did pull within two goals with ten minutes to go after some fine scores from Sean Walsh and Dave Ryan’s third but Killeagh/Itas again saw out the game well.
Carrig now meet Carrigaline in a win-or-go-home back door clash. They will hope for a repeat performance from their league matchup last month.
