Sciath na Scoil Chorcaí Roinn H2 Hurling Final
Scoil Mhuire Naofa v Scoil Oilibhéi in Páirc Uí Rinn, Thursday 24th May 2018
Scoil Mhuire Naofa 3-09 Scoil Olibhéir 3-0
A huge well done to Scoil Mhuire Naofa on their success in the Sciath na Scoil Chorcaí final, which means that for the first time in the school’s history, it has won the Sciath na Scol Chorcaí Indoor Hurling, the INTO Mini-Sevens Hurling Tournament and the Sciath na Scol Chorcaí Hurling Competition, all in the same year. This is a fantastic achievement and is a credit to the players, their coaches and mentors in both school and club.
Scoil Mhuire Naofa’s opponents in the final were from Scoil Oilibhéir in Ballyvolane. The Carrigtwohill School opened the scoring after just two minutes courtesy of a Patrick Walsh point. This was followed up with a point by Joel Joeph who then exploded into the game after nine minutes with a surging run from midfield that he finished with a great strike to the net. Three minutes later, Joel raised another green flag with another fine individual effort that started with a solo-run that yet again cut through the opposition defence. Patrick Walsh then added a pointed ‘65’, to which Scoil Oilibhéir replied with a goal, their first score of the game. The final score of the half came from the stick of team captain, Cillian Barry, who, not to be outdone by teammate Joel, made a great surge through the middle and rifled over a fine point on the run. That made the half-time score 2-04 to 1-0 in favour of the East Cork school.
The second half was in stalemate for the first 15 minutes until Corey Cunningham fielded a high ball on the edge of the square and blasted to the net from close range. However, Scoil Oilibhéir, to their credit, responded with two goals in the space of as many minutes to come within two points of Scoil Mhuire Naofa on a scoreline of 2-05 to 3-0. Patrick Walsh then came alive and hit over three fine points, along with another insurance one by Corey Cunningham.
Well done to all the players and their coaches, Rory Duggan and Joe Nolan on this fantastic achievement.
