East Cork Junior Hurling League 2
Carrigtwohill 2-14 (20) Midleton 3-14 (23)
in Carrig on Monday, June 11th.
It was the proverbial game of two halves as a fantastic second-half fightback by a young Carrig side saw them come up just short against Midleton.
Carrig trailed 3-11 to 1-5 at the half. Daire Crotty opened Carrig’s tally before an Ollie Baverstock strike from distance crept to the net to leave Carrig and Midleton neck and neck inside ten minutes. Midleton slowly exerted themselves on the game however and they were well in control at the interval. Carrig’s first half total was rounded out by two more Ollie Baverstock points, a Chris Keegan free and a Luke Kelly O’Regan strike.
A different Carrig team emerged for the second half and immediately imposed themselves on the match, out-battling Midleton at every position. Carrig scored 1-5 without reply to bring them within four points going into the final quarter. Two Kelly O’Regan points (one free), a Chris Keegan free, a Tommy Hearne point and an Ollie Baverstock point raised the white flags for Carrig before corner-forward Dave Mullins buried to the Midleton net, 2-10 to 3-11. Midleton responded with their first point of the half but it didn’t slow Carrig’s momentum as three Kelly O’Regan points (two frees) had Carrig back within two, 2-13 to 3-12. Midleton answered again to stretch their lead to a goal once more but Chris Keegan’s third free of the night had the deficit back to two with time nearly up. Carrig threw men forward to try and work a goal chance but it wasn’t to be and Midleton had the final score to finish out, 2-14 to 3-14.
