East Cork Junior A Football Championship Quarter-final
Carrigtwohill 1-8 Erins Own 0-7
in Castlemartyr on Saturday, June 9th at 7.30pm.
Referee: Brian Walsh (Aghada)
Carrig progressed to the East Cork Junior Football semi-final after an outstanding performance over last year’s winners and county-finalists, Erins Own.
A warm evening in Castlemartyr was the setting as Carrig got off to a flying start leading four points to one inside the opening ten minutes. Sean Rohan opened the scoring with an excellent strike from distance before Erins Own answered straight away. Further strikes from Liam O’Sullivan, Daire Crotty and another from Sean Rohan saw Carrig deservedly in front. Carrig’s direct running was causing Erins Own difficulties and they could have extended their lead before the Glounthaune side came back into the game. A trio of Erins Own points from the thirteenth to the fifteenth minute had them level before the game tightened up with both sides giving away nothing at the back. The next score didn’t come until twelve minutes later and it was Erins Own who took their first lead of the match. Brendan Horgan sent over a 45′ at the half however to send the sides in level at the break, 0-5 apiece.
Erins Own stretched their lead upon the restart but were immediately pegged back by the outstanding Liam O’Sullivan who converted his second from midfield after another marauding run forward. Erins Own regained the lead three minutes later but Carrig took it back for the last time with back-to-back scores from Seamus Roche and Daire Crotty. 0-8 to 0-7 with twenty minutes left. Erins Own pressed forward as the half wore on but Carrig proved outstanding in defence. And it was Carrig who extended their lead with a fine Brendan Horgan penalty high into the top left hand corner on fifty-three minutes. Three minutes later Horgan added a point to give Carrig a five-point cushion with the finish line in sight. Erins Own threw everything forward but Carrig were dominant in numbers at the back and a last-minute Erins Own point didn’t trouble Carrig’s lead. 1-9 to 0-8 at the finish.
Congratulations to players and management on an absolutely outstanding win. Each player stood up and won their own battles to send Carrig through to an East Cork semi-final against Midleton in mid-July.
