East Cork U21 A Hurling Championship
Carrig 0-22 (22) Castlelyons 4-10 (22)
in Ballinacurra on Thursday, July 12th.
Referee: Cathal McAllister (Aghada)
Carrig earned a draw with a last-gasp Gosnell point in the 63rd minute of our U21 championship bout with Castlelyons. It was no less than Carrig deserved from a game which they edged for most of the evening.
Carrig’s Luke Kelly opened the scoring from left half-forward but Castlelyons took the lead when they nabbed a goal after poor Carrig defending. No sooner had Liam Gosnell tapped over than Castlelyons had their second goal inside the opening five minutes. Carrig set about reducing the deficit with further scores from Kelly, Paul O’Hanlon, Brendan McCarthy and Gosnell. Having been 2-1 to 0-3 behind after ten minutes Carrig were level, 2-2 to 0-8, after twenty. Castlelyons then pushed a point ahead before adding their third goal of the half. Kiitan Oke brought Carrig back within a goal with a fine strike from midfield before Castlelyons added three further points during a purple patch to leave them six ahead; 3-6 to 0-9 on twenty-eight minutes. A strong finish from Carrig led to scores from a Gosnell placed ball, Brendan McCarthy and Paul O’Hanlon for a half-time score of 3-6 to 0-12.
Five of the first seven points of the second half went to Gosnell and Carrig (three frees) to bring Carrig level on forty-seven minutes, 0-17 to 3-8. Carrig then conceded their fourth goal of the game after wasting a chance to take the lead. Two Luke Kelly scores and another Gosnell free had Carrig within one with sixty-one minutes gone, 0-20 to 4-9. Carrig squandered chances to level before Castlelyons went two points up a minute later. A well worked free from Gosnell to Aaron Walsh Barry, who made a run from centre-back to corner forward, almost yielded a goal but Walsh Barry’s strike just cleared the crossbar, 0-21 to 4-10. With one final chance Carrig worked the ball to Liam Gosnell who rescued the draw with the last puck of the game.
With the new round-robin format this year, Carrig will play Watergrasshill on July 24th with the top two from the three teams progressing to the semi-final.
