Carrig are through to the next round of the East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship after a strong finish saw them overcome Cobh in Lisgoold on Friday, July 20th.
Carrig captain Shane Healy, operating at corner-forward, was Carrig’s main outlet in the first half, notching four points inside the first fifteen minutes. A Chris Keegan free and a Daire Crotty strike from distance rounded out Carrig’s early total as Cobh managed four points in reply. Cobh edged ahead in the seventeenth minute however when they raised the only green flag of the evening. Chris Keegan, who was unerring from placed balls all night, drew Carrig level with two frees either side of a fifth Cobh point. A Dara McCann strike, a fourth Keegan free and a Shane Healy ’65 gave Carrig a three-point lead at the half, 0-11 to 1-5.
Daire Crotty opened the scoring in the second half but it was Cobh who had the upper hand in the third quarter when they added three consecutive points to bring them back within the minimum, 0-12 to 1-8. Carrig were then up against it when Cobh were awarded a penalty in the forty-fifth minute but Stephen Flynn stood his ground and saved well to keep Carrig ahead. The penalty proved a wake-up call and Carrig took over the game once again. For the last fifteen minutes Carrig’s defence didn’t concede a score and up the other end Carrig reeled over eight points to finish on top. Four Chris Keegan placed balls (three frees, one ’65), a sixth Healy point, a second McCann score and efforts from Luke Kelly and Kiitan Oke completed Carrig’s tally.
Well done to the players and coaches on the result and the club looks forward to following the progress of this team this year.
