RedFM Senior Hurling League
Carrig 0-23 (23) Bride Rovers 5-14 (29)
in Carrig on Thursday, August 2nd.
Referee: Simon Stokes (Tullylease)
Carrig’s efforts to claim another win in the latest round of the RedFM Senior Hurling league was undone after conceding four first half goals. However, a spirited second-half fightback with an understrength panel gives some cause for optimism with a round 3 championship bout coming up in the next couple of weeks.
Sean Rohan opened the scoring with a fine effort from the right wing but Carrig conceded the first of five goals directly after. Daire Crotty and a long-range strike from Walsh Barry pulled Carrig level. Bride Rovers eked ahead before two Seamus Roche strikes had Carrig one in front after a fast-paced opening five minutes. Bride Rovers took a hold of the game from then on when they robbed Carrig of possession in their own half and buried a second goal. They tacked on two more points before Carrig responded through a Tomás Hogan free. 2-3 to 0-6 after fifteen minutes. However, it was Bride Rovers who kicked on, scoring 2-3 without reply to surge ahead 4-6 to 0-6 with five minutes left in the half. Two Tomás Hogan frees and a Brendan Twomey strike at the half-time whistle brought a tough half to an end. 4-6 to 0-9.
Carrig and Bride Rovers traded scores in the first ten minutes of the second half with Liam O’Sullivan, another Hogan free and Shane Healy keeping Carrig just about in touch; 4-9 to 0-9 on forty minutes. Carrig then rattled over three scores without reply from Brendan Twomey and Tomás Hogan (2). Bride Rovers responded with a brace of points but Hogan was again Carrig’s most effective forward and took Carrig within five with a trio of fine scores (2 frees). 4-11 to 0-18 with ten minutes left. Disaster struck a minute later however as Bride Rovers got in behind a Carrig defense that had been much improved in the second half and notched their fifth goal. They added two more points to put the game beyond reach. Carrig’s players went back to the well and finished the game strongly, outscoring Bride Rovers 0-5 to 0-1 in the last ten minutes. Tomás Hogan (2), Sean Rohan (2) and Brendan Twomey were the scorers.
Carrig now await the draw for round 3 of the Senior Hurling Championship this Monday, August 13th to learn the identity their next championship opponent. Round 3 will be played on the weekend of August 25th/26th or September 1st/2nd.
