Monday 13th August 2018 – Carrigtwohill vs Castlelyons
Perfect conditions for Camogie tonight and with the pitch in fine condition following all the rain, our U13 Girls went out firing on all cylinders from the off.
First five minutes was tit-for-tat, with both teams battling to get the opening score. A fine run from Maedhbh to lay the ball off to Sinead Crowley gave Carrigtwohill the opening goal from fine intelligent play. Castlelyons responded with a lovely point from play shortly after.
Castlelyons were unfortunate not to have two goals up but some great clearance from the full back line kept the scoreline in favour of Carrigtwohill.
16 minutes in, a long ball dropped into the forward line and a sharp Neasa O’Donovan spotted her opportunity and put the score 2:1 – 0:1. At this point the intensity of the game was obvious with both sides giving away frees. Fortunately, a free given to us was taken by Sinead Crowley and hit the back of the net catching the Castlelyons goalkeeper off guard to take Carrig 3:1 – 0.1 up coming up to half time. Castlelyons, not to be outdone took a fine shot from a 45 and put it over the bar. Half time left the score line at 3:1 – 0:3. It was all to play for coming out in the second half.
Castlelyons number 11 made a few fantastic runs straight through from mid field and caught the Carrig backs off guard which was a rare occurrence in this match as they held Castlelyons out of the danger zone more times than we would have liked. A belter of a goal from Castlelyons and point from play brought it 3:1- 1:3.
Not to be outdone, Carrigtwohill girls didn’t take it too well and upped their game to score 2 fast goals coming from a lovely ball dropping at the feet of Eibhlin O’Flynn who converted with ease, and a second from Sinead Crowley again with a lovely over the shoulder shot which looked like it was over the bar but just dropped short over the keepers head and into the back of the net. Two points from frees for Castlelyons brought it to 5:2 – 1:5.
Standing at 7 scores to 6 there was very little to divide the teams but with a few fresh legs and substitutions, Carrig girls pushed on with a final goal and a point from April Normoyle to seal the deal. Castlelyons were never out of the battle and scored two very fast goals which came from a superb catch and run on two occasions.
We had a panel of 20 girls tonight, some of whom have another 2 years at U13 level. It was a delight to see Sadhbh Cooney, Captain on the night lift the shield on behalf of the Team. Sadhbh is example to her team mates who has battled through injury and supported her team all season.
Every girl left it all out on West End tonight and despite the final score of 6:3 – 3:6, Castlelyons never stood back and gave our girls a tough match where there was no margin for error.
Congratulations to the girls and huge thanks to Castlelyons for a sporting game. We are also very grateful for the huge support the girls had on the sidelines from friends, parents & family. You could see the positive response from their play to hear such fantastic encouragement. We want to also wish Maedhbh de Burca a speedy recovery as she tore a ligament going over on her ankle during the first half of the match. Despite the injury and pain, Maedhbh rushed back from the clinic just in time for celebratory pizza!
