U14C Camogie Championship Semi-Final
Carrigtwohill vs Brian Dillons in Carrigtwohill West End – Monday 24th September
Carrigtwohill 2:11 Brian Dillons 0:3
Following on from last week’s tough quarter finals, the girls looked forward to the next step in their Championship campaign – meeting Brian Dillons in the County Semi-Finals. This took place under lights in Carrigtwohill’s Senior pitch, as we were lucky to get drawn at home. This was a great opportunity for both sides to play on a full sized pitch, with great support on the sidelines.
The girls started off strong from the start with Aisling and Abbie, doing their part in Midfield, to get the match off to a quick tempo. It was obvious from the start that Brian Dillons were not going to make things easy for Carrigtwohill and defended deep. They fought for every ball and many skirmishes were evenly matched. At key moments though, Carrigtwohill managed to get control of the ball and keep it in the opponents half, with Ciara Walsh’s work rate in midfield pivotal. Kerri and Alannah were poised in full forward positions but there were not many chances of getting near the goals to score. Our girls took their time and came up with some lovely points from play with Aisling, Kerri and Sinead adding 6 points to the scoreboard to Dillon’s 1 point by half time.
The second half started well with Aisling scoring the first goal of the match early on. Brian Dillons replied with a point soon afterwards, and once again kept up their strong defense throughout. Ciara Horgan was not as busy in goals tonight as she was last week but she did exactly what was asked of her when needed, as did Rachel Desmond, who came on for her early in the 2nd half and made a few lovely saves during her time on the pitch. Maedhbh, Leah, Aoife, April and Sadhbh defended well – more was needed from them in the 2nd half as the Carrigtwohill half saw more action, with Katie Walsh and Michaela typically fearless in winning and moving the ball on nicely throughout the match. Michaela and Ruth added a lovely point from play each with Sinead and Aisling also adding more points to their tally. Holly and Clodagh stayed strong at full front positions when they were brought on as subs and Kerri got a goal towards the end, which she more than deserved.
There was a very strong sense of team work on the pitch tonight. Communication was excellent with the girls used the full length and breadth of the pitch extremely well. To be fair to Brian Dillons, the score did not reflect the fight they brought to the pitch. Their skill and fitness was apparent for all to see and they did not stop fighting for 1 minute of the match. It is easy to see why they reached this stage of the Championship. Huge thanks to them for coming down to us and giving us a strong match. They are a lovely bunch of girls, as is their team of coaches/mentors.
Congratulations to our girls and the coaching team for reaching the County Finals. A huge achievement – this did not happen over night and comes from 2 years of hard work with their coaches Philip and Val. Many of these girls are involved with football U14 and 16, school teams, Imokilly panels and also Cork panels and their commitment needs to be commended. They will play the winners of Sliabh Rua and St. Catherines who play their SF match Sunday 30th.
