County C Championship Final

Carrigtwohill vs Sliabh Rua in Ballinlough GAA Grounds.
Team Bus Carrigtwohill left with 19 very excited girls and their coaches on Saturday morning last at 930 am, to travel to Ballinlough to take part in the Clubs first County Final in 10 years. County Finals have eluded us for a number of years so there was very little of the usual noise and banter in the dressing rooms. There was no doubt nerves were the order of the day !
Pitch and weather conditions couldn’t have been better by the time we arrived in Ballinlough with a brisk but mild wind and plenty of blue skies and a pitch in tip-top condition.
Throw-in at 10.30 am began at a ferocious rate and set the tone for the entire match. Within the first minute of the whistle, Sliabh Rua corner forward hit a wide and Ciara Horgan stopped a fast ball heading into the top right hand corner. Not to be outdone, Carrigtwohill won the puck out and a lovely run from Aisling Sexton, who was left unmarked, gave her a clear shot which she took and placed the ball firmly in the back of the net. Less than a minute later Carrig were very unlucky when the sliotar dropped at the feet of Alannah O’Connell and just went inches off target. Momentum was now building with Carrigtwohill who had now settled the nerves and were ready for battle.
By the 5th minute a lovely point over her left shoulder by Sinead Crowley was answered by a point by Sliabh Rua. They were now on the scoreboard so we expected that to bolster their confidence. This settled their nerves and they were very unlucky to have the next two shots at target go wide. Sliabh Rua girls were on top for the next 5 minute with trojan work done by the Carrig back line by Maedhbh deBurca,Leah Parker & Katie Ryan to keep the sliotar the right end of the pitch.
Unfortunately for Sliabh Rua, our trio of Ciara Walsh, Abbie O’Connor and & Aisling Sexton didn’t let a ball pass them, and won everything from puck outs. The the next 3 minutes saw Kerrie Dorgan put a fantastic ball in the back of the next quickly followed by a point from play. 1:03 – 0:01.
Between 19th and 21st minute there was nothing going further than our midfield with 2 more goals, one from Aisling and another from Kerrie only answered by a point from Sliabh Rua.
Half-time score was Carrig 4:2 – Sliabh Rua 0:4. Only 6 scores to 4, this was still all to play for. However, 2 minutes into 2nd half a fine point from sub Aoife Lehane re-invigorated the Carrig girls who could hear the fantastic support on the sideline. Not to be outdone, Kerrie Dorgan put another on her tally with a superb catch right in front of goal, the Sliabh Rua goalkeeper had no chance at such close range.
The next 10 minutes produced some fantastic displays of hurling from both teams, with some fine runs, catching, hooking and blocking showing a great sense of maturity from such young girls. April Normoyle left her marker constantly frustrated, hooking and blocking and in front every time. In this hiatus however, Ciara Horgan was called on a couple of times and showed a cool, calm and collected exterior which no doubt kept the momentum with Carrig. Sadhbh Cooney was instrumental in keeping her marker quiet by hooking, blocking and hassling at every turn. Micheala Horgan was productive and strong and fed ball to the forward line like it was going out of fashion.
Ruth Ahern and Katie Walsh came into their own and in the 14th minute a loose ball landed at Katie’s feet which she carried herself took a shot and curved the sliotar just under the crossbar to place it firmly in the back of the Sliabh Rua net. Another lovely point from play from Sinead Crowley at 29 minutes on the clock and it was looking like ‘Carrig for the County’ was going to become a reality.
However, testament to our fantastic opponents who never let up at any point during the game, Sliabh Rua caught the Carrig defense in the 2 seconds of the whole game they were slightly off guard, and placed the ball in the Carrig net. However, it was just not their day. Final Score at the whistle 6:5 – 1:5.
Huge thanks must go to Ballinlough GAA for the use and condition of the pitch. Also to Aoife Walsh, Referee who allowed the game to be played as it should. Thanks to our County Board for the lovely words of encouragement and acknowledgement of the hard work these girls have put in, not only this year but last year too – building their skills and fitness and attendance at training which has been outstanding.
Thank you to everyone who wished us well on our journey. Lots of lovely words of encouragement received by the Club in the run up to the final. Massive thanks to all our Supporters. We had by far the best and loudest fans in Ballinlough last Saturday. Thank you all !
Finally to Sliabh Rua – thank you for a fantastic sporting game of Camogie. You are a credit to your Coaches and Club – the girls fought to the final whistle.
