Fé 13 Central Premier 1 Hurling League Final
Carrigtwohill v Sarsfields in Carrigtwohill, Monday 15th October 2018
Carrigtwohill 2-08 Sarsfields 3-10
Carrigtwohill fought valiantly in this final but just hadn’t enough in the tank to get over the line after a solid first half in what was an evenly contested game for the most part.
Sars were first on the scoreboard with a point in the second minute. Joel Joseph won the ball from the resultant puck-out and after a knifing run, he finished to the net. Sarsfields replied with another point in the 5th minute and Carrig then registered the next three white flags in as many minutes courtesy of Joel Joseph after another fine solo-run through the Sars defence, Patrick Walsh with a fine over-the-shoulder effort and Cillian Barry cutting in off the left wing to rifle the ball over the bar off the stick. Sarsfields immediately replied with a goal and a point in quick succession to level matters, 1-3 apiece after just nine minutes of energetic hurling from both teams. Patrick Walsh scored his second point and Sars drew level again with Cillian Barry hitting a snap shot between the posts to keep Carrigtwohill’s nose in front. Sarsfields scored the next two points (one from a free) and Seán Brennan got the last two points of the half (one also from a free) to make it 1-07 to 1-06 in Carrig’s favour at half-time.
There was no score in the early stages of the second half until Sars scored their second goal after eight minutes. Seán Brennan kept Carrig in touch with a pointed free two minutes later but that was to be the home team’s only score for pretty much the entire second half. Sarsfields got a stranglehold on the game and scored an unanswered 1-4 over the next twenty minutes. To Carrig’s credit, they battled extremely hard, with all four Sars’ points landed from frees. The goal, just like the previous two, was an unstoppable close range rasper of a shot that goalkeeper, Tadhg Sullivan miraculously got his hand to but the power of the sliotar was too much. Daniel Murnane, having relocated to the full-forward position for the closing stages of the game scored a consolation goal when he struck a ground shot from the corner of the small square on the stroke of full time.
Credit must go to Sarsfields on their victory in this match, as they were the better team over the hour and deserving winners at that. Carrigtwohill could have no complaints on the evening.
Well done to the players and coaches/mentors on their efforts and on reaching the league final in such impressive fashion, despite some losses in the early stages of the league. The team fought with great heart and did not give up before the final whistle, which typifies the character and spirit of this group of players.
