Fé 16 Central Premier 2A Hurling League Semi-Final
Carrigtwohill v Whitechurch in Carrigtwohill, Monday 22nd October 2018
Carrigtwohill 1-17 Whitechurch 0-11
Carrigtwohill reversed the result between these two sides from their championship encounter earlier in the year to reach the league final.
Seán Walsh opened the scoring with two points from frees before David Joseph made a trademark burst through the middle and rifled over a third point for Carrig. Whitechurch responded immediately with their first point from a free with Seán Walsh immediately cancelling it out from another placed ball. Again the visitors replied with a free and Justin Oke then scored a fine point from right out on the left wing to make it 0-05 to 0-02 in favour of Carrigtwohill after ten minutes. It was all Carrig for the next ten minutes as they scored an unanswered 1-04. Justin Oke fired over two points before Liam Scriven controlled the ball brilliantly, cut through and kicked the ball to the net. This was followed with two fine points; Seán Walsh putting the ball between the posts off his left hand side with an audacious effort almost at the corner flag and Dáire Sullivan landing the ball over the bar from the very centre of the pitch. Carrig were now cruising with a ten point lead, 1-09 to 0-02. A drop in tempo before half-time left Whitechurch back into the game though, as they registered the last four scores – all points – of the first half; three of them from frees. Carrigtwohill went to the break six points to the good on a scoreline of 1-09 to 0-06.
Neil Coughlan increased Carrig’s lead when he pointed shortly after the restart. The next twenty minutes was a free-ridden affair with Seán Walsh converting three to Whitechurch’s four to make it 1-13 to 0-10 with eight minutes remaining. Carrigtwohill finished the stronger with another four points; three from Seán Walsh (all frees) and a fourth point for Justin Oke. Whitechurch scored one more point from a free.
Well done to the players and coaches/mentors on their efforts and on reaching the league final in such impressive fashion. This was a very good performance, one of the best by the team this year. Apart from a lapse in effort shortly before half-time, the team hurled very well with great determination and drive. Youghal are Carrig’s opponents in the final. Another huge effort will be needed against the Premier 2A championship winners from the seaside town.
