Division 2 Hurling League
Fermoy 0-12 Carrigtwohill 0-12 in Fermoy on Sunday, February 24th at 2pm.
Referee: Dave Farrell Sr (Mitchelstown)
Carrig will be disappointed to have left a three-point halftime lead slip in the opening game of this year’s county league. An under-strength Carrig hurled well under tough conditions on a Fermoy pitch that wasn’t conducive to free-flowing hurling. Carrig got out to a great start leading by 0-5 to 0-1 after twenty minutes with scores from Tomás Hogan (0-2), Daire Crotty, Padraic Hogan (0-1f) and Liam Gosnell. Fermoy eked their way back into the match however and only trailed 0-8 to 0-5 at the turnaround with a Gosnell free, a second Crotty strike and a Walsh Barry score rounding out Carrig’s first half total.
The second half started as a more even affair but Fermoy were slowly eating into Carrig’s lead and a P. Hogan long-range free and a Gosnell close-in placed ball had Carrig ahead by the bare minimum going into the final quarter. The game eventually came down to accuracy from the placed ball and neither marksman blinked as Liam Gosnell scored two more frees to bring Carrig’s full-time tally to 0-12, a figure matched by Fermoy in the closing stages.
Carrig now look forward to the first home league game of the year against Kilworth this Sunday at 2pm.
