Midleton v Carrigtwohill in Midleton, Friday 24th May 2019
Midleton 3-09 Carrigtwohill 4-13
The short trip to the distillery town to take on the Magpies was a welcome contrast to the long journey to Newtownshandrum for the previous league fixture.
Midleton had the better start to this match, going into a three point lead (0-04 to 0-1) after thirteen minutes, with Patrick Walsh opening Carrig’s account. Two frees from the dependable Seán Brennan along with a long range Daniel Murnane effort and a point from Joel Joseph levelled matters on twenty minutes, 0-05 apiece. Shane Buckley then timed his run onto a partially blocked strike by Cillian Barry that landed short of the crossbar and batted the dropping ball into the net. Midleton immediately responded with a goal from the puck-out to level matters again, 1-05 to 1-05. Carrigtwohill finished the half stronger with two points (one a free) from Seán Brennan, a Daniel Murnane goal directly from a ‘65’ with the ball hopping up into the net having landed in the square and another point by Joel Joseph. This put the visitors six points to the good (1-05 to 2-08) at half-time.
Seán Brennan was first on the scoreboard in the second half with his second point from play. Daniel Murnane then scored a near carbon copy of his first goal from a long range free that again landed in the square and the sliotar bounced up into the goal. Another pointed free from Seán Brennan was followed by a Patrick Walsh goal when he got possession of a monstrous clearance from Daniel Murnane. Midleton had managed just a single point during that ten minute spell, so Carrig had now opened up a thirteen point lead with the score reading 1-06 to 4-10. However, the Magpies again goaled within a minute of Carrig hitting the net. To Midleton’s credit, they closed the gap further in the latter stages of the game, scoring 1-03 to Carrigtwohill’s 0-03 (two frees from Seán Brennan and a point by Patrick Walsh).
Well done to the players and mentors on what was a heartening performance a fortnight out from the Féile na nGael finals, which the Juvenile Club is jointly hosting with the Camogie Club.
