East Cork U21 A Hurling Championship 1st Round
Carrig 2-19 (25) Youghal 1-15 (18) in Castlemartyr on Saturday, July 6th at 7.30pm.
Referee: Niall O’Neill (Midleton)
Well done to our u21 hurlers who came out on top of a hard-fought contest with Youghal in the first round robin game of this year’s championship.
Carrig were slow starters and trailed 1-5 to 0-1 after fifteen minutes but Carrig worked their way back into the game thanks to unerring frees from Liam Gosnell and good showing inside from Sean Walsh and Ollie Baverstock. Youghal edged it at the half; 1-7 to 0-9.
Carrig continued their momentum from the second quarter and were much the better side after the restart. Gosnell was again impeccable on frees and Carrig added to their tally through Daire McCann, Sean Walsh and Shane O’Hanlon pointing from wing-back. James Mulcahy also got on the scoresheet with a fine point from out on the right hand sideline. Carrig were on top down the middle with Matthew Kidney and Daire Crotty on a lot of ball and could have been more comfortable but for a series of missed goal chances. When the goal did come though it was worth the wait as Liam Gosnell burst through at the end of a good move and netted into the bottom left-hand corner. Sean Walsh added a second Carrig goal to seal the win.
Carrig now look forward to their next game against St. Catherines which is fixed for Saturday, July 20th.
