Championship Round 2 – Monday 9th
Carrigtwohill v’s Killeagh
Following a mixed bag of results so far this season, 18 girls travelled to Killeagh for a second bite of the proverbial Championship Cherry tonight.
Excellent conditions with Killeaghs pitch in tip-top condition and a beautiful sunny evening gave us the backdrop for a great match.
Carrigtwohill girls came out of the traps on fire led by Captain April Normoyle and despite playing against the wind in the first half netted a brace of goals from play from Erica O’Keefe and Holly Madden in the 6th and 7th minute.
A well placed Emily Warren-Perry was in the right place and was unlucky to just get her shot wide of the mark. April Normoyle covered acres of ground and provided plenty of ball to the forwards with some excellent individual runs.
9 minutes later a fantastic point from play from Sinead Crowley over her left shoulder made it 2:1 – 0:0. Eva Lane got in front of her marker picked a dead ball and put it in the back of the net on the 13th minute. Another point from play from Sinead with a goal from Maedhbh deBúrca gave Carrigtwohill a substantial lead heading into the 2nd half. With a couple of minutes injury time Ruth Ahern spotted a loose ball and put a lovely point over the bar.
Half time score : Carrigtwohill 4:3- KIlleagh 2:1
It was all to play for with Killeagh putting huge pressure on our back line from the start of the second half. Eibhlin O’Flynn cleared no end of ball with Alannah O’Connell hassling at every turn. Abbie Buckley did her fair share on the night and kept pressure on her marker. An introduction of fresh legs, and namely Jodi O’Connor & Neasa O’Donovan who both hassled and harried their markers constantly.
Sadhbh Cooney showed no remains of her first half winding and gave her girl no break whatsoever. Robyn Walsh remained strong and steady for the entire match coming out the better on most of her battles. Grainne Cuddigan did Trojan work and following a lovely catch in the air, was unlucky not to point.
A free won by Alannah headed up the line and made its way to Ruth who again placed a lovely ball between the posts. There were plenty of danger moments in the second half where our back lines were put under heavy pressure from Killeagh. A few nice stops from Rachel Desmond and support from the backs kept the Killeagh girls from getting those all important goals.
Overall a great team performance which brings us to next round of Championship !
