Our U16’s strong League campaign earlier in the season saw them coming 2nd in their League table, which resulted in them being drawn against Ballinhassig in the County Semi-final.
The girls knew this would be a tough physical game and true to form they got off to a strong start, with Aisling and Ruth both scoring a point each within the first 3 minutes. But it didn’t take long for Ballinhassig to settle into the game and get a point to add themselves to the scoreboard with 5 minutes gone. Although we scored 3 more points from play in the next 5 minutes, Ballinhassig always looked threatening and they were rewarded by a goal that our goalkeeper, Ciara Horgan could not do much about, followed quickly by a point and another goal, putting them ahead at 14 minutes into the half. There was nothing between the 2 teams for the rest of the 2nd half with scores being traded back and forth. A lovely point from free by Aisling followed shortly by a goal from Holly gave us a bit of space, but Ballinhassig took their chances well also by adding a further 4 points to their tally. Another goal from Carrigtwohill at the 25 minute mark by Ruth drew both teams level on scores. A lovely point by Aisling just 2 minutes before the whistle blew saw us with a narrow 1 point lead going into the 2nd half.
The 2nd half saw a determined opposition team getting off to a strong start with a quick goal being scored within a minute. This was followed by 5 minutes of close play on both sides but the deadlock was broken at 7 minutes in with a goal from play by Kerrie. Our girls really started to come into their own from then on with Michaela, Ciara and April at the half back line communicating well and moving the play up the pitch and away from danger. Aisling and Abbie stayed strong in midfield with some lovely passes onto Una, Sinead and Holly in the half forward line. With 2 more goals from Katie and Ruth 10 minutes into the half, it started to look like we had a handle on the game. But Ballinhassig never gave up and always showed us signs of danger. Ciara Horgan was kept busy throughout with some lovely saves and quick thinking needed at times to keep the ball from the net. Maedhbh, Sadhbh and Katie worked hard at the back line and our subs Clodagh, Alannah and Rachel saw some fresh legs coming on and putting in the effort when it was needed, with Kerrie and Holly being moved back to more defensive roles to ensure we kept our lead safe.
Despite our opposition’s best efforts they were just not able to break through to score anymore in the 2nd half and 3 more points from Michaela, Aisling and Sinead towards the end of the match saw us extend our lead to 10 points by the final whistle. A sigh of relief from all their support on the sideline!
What a match! What an effort! We really can’t praise this group of girls more – once again they have done their coaches, club and most importantly themselves, proud. For a young squad to get to an U16 final is a huge achievement and we wish them the very best in the County Final against Blarney in November.
