Championship v Russell Rovers on Friday 1st March 2013

Carrigtwohill 2-5 Russell Rovers 3-7

Carrig began this U21 Football Championsip game missing a large number of players, and had no starting player up to the age. Despite this fact the young team that was fielded still made a strong push. Darren O'Driscoll opened the scoring with a fine long range effort in the fifth minute before Russell Rovers responded with two quick points. Carrig, however, regained the lead in the 15th minute when a Jason Leahy free dropped short and Eoin O'Mahony managed to flick the ball into the back of the net. Another O’Driscoll point was then followed by a very well taken goal for Russell Rovers who began to dominate the half from there on. Rovers added on a further two points at the end of the half, with Jay Horgan, John Carey and Oliver Cooney working hard for Carrig. The half time score was 1-2 to 1-4 in favour of Rovers.

Rovers opened the scoring in the second half with another goal coming from a run straight through the heart of the defence and managed to add on two more points after. Carrig then made a strong push to try get back into the game largely through the accurate free taking of Eoin O Mahony who kicked three within the next 10 minutes. In the 50th minute Carrig were awarded a penalty and O’Mahony stepped up to blast it past the keeper to reduce the difference between the sides to a single point. From there on however Russel Rovers closed out the game despite some poor accuracy from their forwards and a goal for them in the final minutes finished off the Carrig fightback. It was a good effort from the Carrig lads. Best on the day for Carrig were Eoin O'Mahony, Oliver Cooney, Darren O'Driscoll and Aaron Gosnell.
