Willie John Daly Inducted into Hall of Fame
Willie John Daly, one of Carrig’s greatest players, was inducted into the Vintage Gaels Hall of Fame at a lovely ceremony in the Fota Hotel and Resort recently (Novemer 2011). A crowd of over 200 people came along to celebrate Willie John’s career, including admirers and friends from other clubs around Cork. The crowd were entertained by a selection of local singers, dancers and musicians and members of Carrig’s senior hurling panel were among the guests.
The event doubled as a fund-raiser for Marymount Hospice and it was hugely successful in this regard too. Willie John donated a Railway Cup medal that he won with Munster in 1955 and that raised €1,000 in an auction; the medal was ultimately bought by the club with the help of a generous donor. A Cork jersey and a Carrig jersey signed by Willie John and Niall McCarthy were also auctioned.
