Carrigtwohill v Midleton in Carrigtwohill
Monday 18th July
Carrigtwoill 2.10 - Midleton 3.12 (after extra time)
A late rally saw Carrig bring this match to extra time but they then tired and Midleton were deserving winners of a game played on the hottest day of the year.
Daniel Murnane converted a close range free to open the scoring in the game. Midleton dominated the exchanges thereafter, scoring 1-3 to a fisted point by David Joseph, to lead by a goal midway through the half. Liam Scriven kicked a fine angled point from 30m on the West End wing and then Midleton exchanged scores with Daniel Murnane (free) to make it 0-4 to 1-04 at half-time. The score was a fair reflection of that first half.
Seán Brennan kicked a close range point with his first touch, seconds after the restart, having been introduced at half-time. Liam Scriven lofted a left-footed effort high over the bar to add to his right-footed first half score. The Magpies then struck for 1-2 to go two goals ahead (0-06 to 2-06) fifteen minutes into the second half. Ronan Browne collected the ball after it rebounded off the post from a David Joseph shot at goal and finished low to the net, with the ball going in off the same post again. Midleton responded with a goal to make it a six point lead with five minutes of normal times remaining and it looked like the game was gone from Carrigtwohill. Daniel Murnane pointed a ‘45’ and Mark O’Connor kicked a 13m free after Jonathan Spillane found the net but the referee had blown for a foul. That brought Carrig to within four points heading into added time. Daniel Murnane scored another free and then in the 62nd minute, he roamed upfield from the goal and after playing a ‘one-two’, drove the ball low into the far corner to level the game.
Midleton got the only score (a point) in the first half of extra time. Unfortunately, Carrigtwohill only managed a single Liam Scriven point in the second half, with Midleton adding another five to run out five point winners.
Well done to the team and their coaches on their effort and hard luck on the result. Comhghairdeas to Midleton and the best of luck to them in the remainder of the competition.
