Back to Back Wins for Junior Hurlers
April 30, 2023
East Cork Junior Hurling League Div 1 in Carrigtwohill on Saturday 29th April
Carrigtwohill 2-12 Cobh 1-13
The junior hurlers lined out against Cobh in West End on the back of a good win against Bride Rovers in the previous league match earlier in April. They needed another win to keep them away from the bottom of the table.
The game took a while to settle into a rythm and was very low-scoring in the early stages. Cobh opened up a two point lead (0-01 to 0-03) after 15 minutes, with Mark O’Connor opening Carrig’s account. An O’Connor free and a fine David Rooney effort from 65m levelled things but Cobh responded with a brace of scores to go two points clear again after 20 minutes. Mark O’Connor got an opportunist flick to the net on a long ball into the edge of the square from Seán O’Sullivan and then converted another free. Jay Horgan split the posts after receiving an underarm handpass from Shane Healy that came straight out of the Joe Canning handbook. Cobh raised two more white flags to make it 1-05 to 0-07 approaching half-time. Séamus Roche pointed after a good offload by Ollie Baverstock and Cobh struck for three swift points to edge things at the break on a scoreline of 1-06 to 0-10.
Just after the restart, Baver cut in off the wing, showing good pace and hit the roof of the net from a tight angle for Carrig’s second goal. Cobh reduced the gap to the minimum from a free. Carrigtwohill gained control of the game and outscored the Cathedral town by six points to two during the next twenty minutes. Seán O’Sullivan scored three nice points, Mark O’Connor added two more (one free) to his tally and Rochy doubled his account. Cobh got the last score of the game; a goal in added time.
Well done to the panel and their coaches/mentors for a very good performance, which now sees them in the middle of the table after impressive back-to-back wins. A special mention must go to David Rooney who put in a towering performance at centre back. The next game in the Division 1 League is against St. Ita’s in Pilmore on the 13th May.
