FÉ17 FOOTBALLERS KICK OFF THE YEAR WITH A WIN
May 30, 2023
Fé17 East Football League Division 2 in Killavullen on Sunday, 28th May
Killavullen 3-07 Carrigtwohill 4-09
The U17s travelled to Killavullen for their first match of the year and took to the field in North Cork in what were perfect conditions for a Sunday morning game of football.
Killavullen were faster out of the traps and ran into a 2-02 to 0-02 lead in the opening quarter as Carrig struggled to get any rhythm going. Patrick Walsh opened Carrigtwohill’s account from two placed balls. Patrick and Ben Murphy both pointed from play with Killavullen reciprocating to keep the gap at six points. Carrig came strong in the final ten minutes of the half with a flurry of goals. Kane Mulcahy burst through the centre, and offloaded to Matthew Barrett who popped the ball to Patrick and he blasted it to the net. Mark McCarthy followed up with a super effort to the corner of the goal. Daniel Nolan toe-poked the ball to the net after the Killavullen goalkeeper saved a goalward shot and the ball ended up on the goal line. Ben Murphy notched his first point from a free and Daniel doubled his goal tally by goaling with a fine effort. The 2-04 to 4-05 half-time scoreline probably did flatter Carrigtwohill, given that they only got properly into gear for the last 10-12 minutes of the half.
Carrigtwohill continued to dominate in the second half but the final shot selection and accuracy were not of the highest quality. Patrick Walsh (two) and Ben Murphy (one) increased the lead to ten points. Killavullen then came back strong, scoring three points on the trot. Patrick pointed a free late in the game and Killavullen finished the scoring with their third goal.
Well done to the panel of players and their coaches/mentors on starting the year with a win. There is plenty of room for improvement but credit to the players for knuckling down and showing good work-rate after a shaky start to the match.
