WINNING START TO CHAMPIONSHIP FOR JUNIOR A FOOTBALLERS
June 18, 2023
Carrig stuttered for passages of this match but ultimately figured out how to win it and got the result on a sunny and warm evening in Cobh.
Erin’s Own had Carrig on the back foot in the opening quarter as they dominated possession and ran up a 0-02 to 1-02 lead. Brendan Twomey fed Pat O’Sullivan for Carrigtwohill’s opening score and Daniel Murnane lofted a super effort over the bar from out on the right wing. Seán Buckley could do nothing about a powerful well-struck Erin’s own goal and managed to get his fingertips to it with his diving effort. As the half wore on, the exchanges evened up. Murnane converted a free and Cian O’Riordan split the posts after good work from Tomás Hogan; Erin’s Own kept the gap to a goal with two frees. Carrig rallied late in the half with Seán Walsh flashing a lose ball over the bar on the volley from close range and Daniel scoring another free after he was fouled. The half-time scoreline of 0-06 to 1-04 probably flattered Carrig but they had weathered the early Erin’s Own storm to go in only a point adrift.
Carrig were caught napping immediately after the restart and Erin’s Own goaled within seconds of the throw-in. Carrigtwohill really came into the game thereafter, creating some good scoring chances as they improved their possession and distribution. James Mulcahy cut in off the wing and blasted over the bar. Daniel Murnane curved an audacious 13m free over the bar from the right hand sideline and then split the posts on the turn with Cillian Barry the provider. Pat O’Sullivan cut in and notched a point to make it 0-10 to 2-05; Carrig trailing by one again. Jamie McCarthy made a good run, fed a through ball to James Mul whose long handpass across the goalmouth was fisted to the net by the incoming Cillian Barry. Carrig were now in front (1-10 to 2-05) on 45 minutes for the first time in the match and held Erin’s Own to a single pointed free for the remainder of the game. Murnane lofted a shot over the bar as he fell off balance. Aaron Walsh Barry charged through the middle and finished well with a point. Fittingly, the excellent Daniel Murnane completed the scoring with his seventh point of the game.
This was a match that Carrig worked very hard to win, despite not playing very well in the opening stages of the game. Well done to the team and the management on sticking to the task, puting the shoulder to the wheel and getting the result.
