July 08, 2023
Carrigtwohill GAA Club held its annual golf classic in East Cork Golf Club on the 28th and 29th June. Almost 60 teams teed off in the event, which went off really well in what were generally good weather conditions.
The prize-giving took place on Thursday, 29th June in Guilders Bar. Golf Classic Committee chairperson, Norman Walsh welcomed everybody and immediately dispelled the rumours that the Carrigtwohill Golf Classic was joining up with the LIV tour! He thanked Claire Moloney and all of the staff at East Cork Golf Club for the warm welcome and kindness that was shown to everybody. Norman also expressed our gratitude towards Dave Ryan, Pro at the club for his assistance over the last number of weeks.
Norman thanked all of the sponsors, teams, tee-box sponsors, Carraig Print, Ahern’s Centra, Hurley’s MACE and Christy Roche for their continued support of the event. He expressed the club’s sincere gratitude to main sponsor Guilders Bar.
Within the GAA club, Norman thanked Dave Sullivan, PRO for his promotion of the event via the various channels. He also expressed his gratitude towards the Golf Classic committee of Michael Ahern, Gary Baverstock, John O’Donnell, Ted Carroll and Joe Buckley. Norman acknowledged their hard work in making the event the success that it was.
Last year, the Golf Classic Committee introduced a Hall of Fame, into which the ‘founding fathers’ of the event were inducted on the 30th anniversary of the maiden golf event in 1992. This year four more people were inducted into the Hall of Fame, in recognition of their input to the event over many years. Jimmy O’Reilly, Ted Carroll, John O’Donnell and Tony O’Flynn were all presented with certificates to mark their induction into the Hall of Fame. [Congratulations to Jimmy & Margaret O’Reilly, who marked their 40th wedding anniversary as midnight struck on the night!]
Club chairperson, Caroline Dixey addressed those in attendance, thanking Norman and all of the hard-working Golf Classic committee. She also thanked the main and associated sponsors. Caroline noted that all monies raised from the Golf Classic go directly to the club to provide great facilities for players and members.
Norman and Caroline presented the prizes, as follows:
