Senior A Hurling Championship in Killeagh on Saturday 12th August
Carrigtwohill 03.19 - 1.11 Cloyne
Cloyne had three points on the board, playing with the diagonal wind advantage. James Mulcahy opened Carrig’s account on 6 minutes with a nice strike on the turn after good ball-winning by Jamie McCarthy and a surging run from Seán Walsh. Walsh then pointed a free after he was fouled. Cloyne converted a ‘65’ and Daniel Murnane hit Seán with a direct ball; Walsh angled a super strike high between the posts from the left wing. Cian O’Riordan was fouled after digging out possession and Seán raised another white flag for Carrig. Ciano then pointed from the right wing after a direct clearance from Jay Horgan to put Carrigtwohill in the lead for the first time on the quarter hour mark on a scoreline of 0-05 to 0-04. Cloyne traded a score with Seán Walsh and he then added two more frees to his tally after James Mul and Cian were fouled, having both won good possession. Aaron Walsh Barry found Mul with a long diagonal ball and he pointed. A Cloyne free was responded to with a hard earned Tomás Hogan point. Seán Walsh notched another score from a placed ball after Liam Gosnell was fouled in possession. Cloyne got the final score of the half to make it 0-11 to 0-07.
The lead was cut to two points with a brace of Cloyne scores early in the second half. Liam Gosnell cut in off the wing and arrowed the ball between the posts after good grafting by Seán Walsh. Daniel Murnane landed a huge effort over the crossbar from his own 65m line after a good ball across from Pádraic Hogan. Cloyne converted a free and Walsh hit a fine effort over from distance on the wing to make it 0-14 to 0-10 midway through the half. James Mul scored his third from a tight angle. Cloyne were awarded a penalty and they goaled from it, despite Shane Devlin's diving effort and getting his hurley to it. There was stalemate for fives minutes and Cloyne pointed to reduce the gap to the minimum (0-15 to 1-11) on 56 minutes. Gozzy struck two late frees over the bar, the second one from over 70m. Brendan Twomey made a surging run out of defence up the right wing and scored a fantastic point on the run. Twomey then linked up with Liam O’Sullivan to find Mul, who split the posts for the final score of the game.
Comhghairdeas to the panel of players, management and backroom team on getting another vital two points. The team showed good composure when Cloyne closed the margin to one point in the second half. The team is improving and there is still plenty of room for further improvement and progress, which is really heartening. Carrig will play Fermoy in their final group game on the 2nd September in Watergrasshill.
