Junior C Hurling Championship Round 1 Group 1 in Caherlag on Monday 14th August
Carrigtwohill 3.19 - 2.11 Erin's Own
The opening quarter was a pretty even contest, with the match level (1-06 to 2-03) after 15 minutes. Alex Kidney opened the scoring for Carrig with a point. Shane O’Hanlon notched four points (two frees) on the trot with two of them from distance. Erin’s Own had struck for a goal either side of Shano’s run of scores. Chris Keegan fed George McCarthy who split the posts and Keegan then fielded high from a long Jack Scully clearance and blasted to the net. The teams traded two points apiece to keep level matters again (1-08 to 2-05) with five minutes to go to half-time; Alex Kidney and O’Hanlon (free) getting Carrig’s scores. Carrigtwohill kicked on in the final five minutes, scoring an unanswered 1-4 in a five minute spell. Keegan pointed with George the provider. Chris then goaled again after fetching another long delivery, this time from Daragh Hannigan. Keegan added a point immediately with Hannigan again supplying the ball in. Alex Kidney finished Carrig’s flurry of scoring with two fine efforts that both landed over the crossbar; one from either sideline. Erin’s Own added another point on the stroke of half-time to make it 2-12 to 2-06 in favour of Carrigtwohill.
Erin’s Own struck three unanswered scores early in the second half to reduce the margin to a goal. Carrigtwohill dominated the remainder of the game. Darragh McCann pointed and Shane O’Hanlon converted a ‘65’. Ronan McCrave, who made a big impact after being introduced at half-time, deadened the ball and laid off a lovely pass to Shano, who split the posts. Two minutes later, McCrave goaled after good interplay between McCann and O’Hanlon. Darragh Hannigan struck a fine point from midfield and Liam Sciven worked hard to get the ball to Shano, who made it 3-17 to 2-09 on 48 minutes. The scoring slowed for the rest of the half with the teams trading a brace of scores each. Jack Barrett and Chris Keegan (free) finished the scoring for Carrig.
Well done to the panel and management on a very good championship performance. Carrigtwohill will play Carraig na bhFear and Fr. O’Neill’s in the remaining group matches.
