Carrigtwohill v Glenville in Glenville, Wednesday 28th August 2019
Carrigtwohill 9-10 Glenville 4-07

After the disappointment of the one point loss to Fermoy at the same stage in the Premier 1 hurling championship, Carrig set to the task of making amends, albeit in another code, with a determined start to this match.

Carrigtwohill were first on the scoreboard after just three minutes when centre-back, Cormac Murphy made a surging run up the left wing and after a one-two with Fionn Kidney, blasted the ball to the roof of the net. Daniel Murnane followed up with a brace of points (one free) and Glenville opened their account with three points to trail by two (1-02 to 0-3) almost midway through the half. Kyle Graham then pulled off two fantastic saves, one of them a point blank stop to deny Glenville two certain goals. Glenville still managed to register the next three scores (1-2) to lead 1-05 to 1-02. It was towards the end of the half that Carrig really began to find a groove that they kept for the remainder of the match as they reeled off 2-3 to Glenville’s solitary point. The two goals (courtesy of Daniel Murnane and Mark McCarthy), which were scored in injury time gave Carrigtwohill a five point lead at the break, 3-05 to 1-06.

The visitors blitzed the hosts in the early stages of the second half of this match to essentially end it as a contest just ten minutes after the restart, despite playing without the slight wind and slight hill advantage. A neat Cillian Barry point was followed by goals from Joel Joseph and Mark McCarthy either side of a Daniel Murnane pointed free to increase the lead to thirteen points. Glenville responded with 1-1 to close the gap to three goals but that was the end of their challenge. Carrig kicked on again, playing some really impressive passing football and great defensive work, with players giving it their all in each line of the field. Four further goals followed from Joel Joseph, Seán Brennan, Daniel Murnane and Cillian Barry to cap what was an extremely convincing team performance on the evening. Glenville scored two more goals during the final quarter.

A special mention must go to the Carrig keeper, Kyle Graham. He was ever dependable throughout the match and pulled off some fantastic saves. Kyle’s two stops midway through the first half were a ‘game changer’. They averted certain goals for Glenville and were critical in keeping Carrigtwohill in the match at a time when the home team were imposing themselves on the game.

Well done to the team, their coaches and mentors on a brilliant performance and on reaching the semi-final of the football championship. The opponents will be Bantry Blues or Bandon. The Juvenile Club wishes a speedy recovery to corner-back, Ben Allen who sustained a broken wrist that required surgery following a very heavy knock to the ground as the result of a late tackle after he had cleared the ball towards the end of the game.

Scorers for Carrigtwohill: Daniel Murnane 2-7 (4f), Joel Joseph & Mark McCarthy 2-0 each, Seán Brennan 1-2, Cillian Barry 1-1, Cormac Murphy 1-0.

Carrigtwohill Team: Kyle Graham, Neill Hill, Aaron Desmond, Ben Allen, Keelan Aylward, Cormac Murphy, Daniel Nolan, Cillian Barry, Joel Joseph, Patrick Walsh, Daniel Murnane, Matthew Barrett, Seán Brennan, Mark Murphy, Fionn Kidney. Subs (used): Jamie Cotter, Success Aregbesola.
